Streamingfilter

Privacy

Short version: we collect as little as possible and sell nothing.

Who runs this site

Streamingfilter is run by Vincent Ronden, who is responsible for the processing of personal data on this site (the "controller" under the GDPR). You can reach him at the email address at the bottom of this page.

That address is also the contact point for all questions about your privacy. In Brazil this is known as the channel for the "encarregado" (data protection contact).

Without an account

You can use the whole site without an account. We place no cookies until you choose a country or press "Remember on this device" on the streaming services page. That stores one functional cookie containing only your country and the services you ticked, for one year, so the site remembers your choice. If you pick a language at the bottom of the page, a second functional cookie remembers that choice for one year. They contain no ID and are never used for tracking. There are no third-party analytics, tracking pixels or third-party scripts. Images are served from our own server, so your browser doesn't contact other sites while you browse.

With an account

An account consists of a username and a password. We don't ask for your e-mail address or name. Passwords are stored as a one-way hash (Argon2id), so even we can't read them. If you add a birth year, it is only used for the childhood and youth filters. Your country, streaming services, language, default filters and search setting (if you set any) are stored with your account so the site can show your choices on every device. Your favourites, saved searches and the films and series you mark as watched (with your star rating, if you give one) are stored with your account. They are used to show your own lists, later perhaps to suggest titles you might like, and (only the numbers, not the titles) on the scoreboard if you take part. One session cookie keeps you logged in; it is also set when you open the log-in or sign-up page, to protect those forms against abuse. We process this data to provide the account you asked for.

If you don't log in for three years, your account is deleted automatically, with everything in it. We can't warn you beforehand, because we don't know your e-mail address.

Scoreboard

Members can appear on the public scoreboard with their username, the flag of the country they signed up from and their numbers: how many films and series they watched and rated, how many they opened, how many trailers they played and on how many days they visited. For this we record, per day, which titles a member opened and which trailers they played. You can switch the scoreboard off when you sign up or at any time in your account; you then disappear from it straight away, nothing more is recorded and the history kept for it is deleted. Visitors without an account are never recorded.

Visitor statistics

To see which pages are used, we count visits ourselves, without cookies and without Google Analytics or any other outside service. Your browser sends the page address, the web page you came from (we keep it without anything after a question mark, where search terms or codes can be), your screen width and your time zone (to estimate the country). A visitor is recognised for one day only, with a scrambled code that is replaced every night, so visits can't be linked across days or traced back to you. Your IP address is not stored. If your browser sends "Do Not Track" or "Global Privacy Control", you are not counted at all. The detailed visit log is deleted after 95 days; only daily totals (numbers, nothing about individual visitors) are kept for two years.

We also note the type of device (phone or computer), the browser and the operating system, such as "phone, Safari, iOS", but not the full technical details your browser sends. When you search with the search bar, the search term is counted, and so is the service of a "Watch on …" button you press. This shows us what people look for; it is not linked to an account and can't be traced back to you. Search terms are deleted after 30 days.

To estimate roughly how many visitors come back, we also note whether your browser already had one of the cookies described above when you arrived: only yes or no, never what is in it.

Protection against abuse

To stop people from guessing passwords and flooding the site, some actions are limited per connection: log-in attempts, creating accounts, password recovery and feature requests (two per day). For this we store a scrambled (hashed) version of your IP address, never the address itself, and delete it within 24 hours. Adding a new country to the site is limited to one per connection per 30 days; that scrambled code is deleted after 30 days.

Feature requests

If you send a feature request, we store only the text you typed and the date. No name, account or address is attached to it.

Trailers

Trailers are hosted by YouTube. Nothing is loaded from YouTube until you press play; we then use YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com). From that moment YouTube's own privacy policy applies.

Links to streaming services

Buttons such as "Watch on Netflix" take you to that service's website. What happens there is covered by their privacy policy.

Where your data is stored

The site and its data are hosted by Strato in Germany, within the European Union, where European privacy law (the GDPR) protects them. If you visit from outside the EU, for example from Brazil, your data is therefore stored in the EU. Like every web host, Strato keeps short technical logs (such as IP addresses) to keep its servers running safely.

Why we may process this

Account data is processed because you asked for an account (performance of a contract). Visitor statistics and abuse protection are based on our legitimate interest in keeping the site working, safe and useful, and are set up so they can't be traced back to you. The scoreboard is based on our legitimate interest in a fun community feature; it only uses the username you chose (not your real name) and you can leave it at any time. The functional cookies are strictly necessary for what you asked the site to do, so they don't require consent.

Under Brazil's LGPD these are the same legal bases: "execução de contrato" (performance of a contract) and "legítimo interesse" (legitimate interest).

Your rights

You have the right to see, correct and delete the personal data we hold about you, to object to its use and to take it with you. You can delete your account at any time on the account page; that removes everything we store about you immediately. For anything else, email us at the address at the bottom of this page and we'll reply within 15 days.

If you think we handle your data wrongly, you can also file a complaint with the Dutch Data Protection Authority, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens.

If you live in another EU country, you can also turn to the data protection authority of your own country; in France that is the Commission nationale de l'informatique et des libertés (CNIL).

If you live in Brazil, the Brazilian General Data Protection Law (LGPD) gives you the same rights, and you can also file a complaint with the Autoridade Nacional de Proteção de Dados (ANPD).
